Search and social media are fast becoming more inter-linked than ever before, simply because the implementation of including social results within the general search results.
We've seen it with Google including Twitter within its search results for various popular search terms, and not it seems that with Facebook and Bing joining forces, it's going to go to the next level of search and social interaction.
Although a high number of people use twitter, for many it's purely a "sharing tool" where you go to find out information about topics of interest. It doesn't seem to matter how many people you follow, theirs only a handful of people that many keep their eye on, and for many, it's simply because these people share relevant, and specific information that's of interest to the end user.
For the "techie" it's probably the best thing since sliced bread, but for the average internet user, it's scary, it's information overload, it's many things but useful.
So, with Google remaining to be the centre of information and providing highly relevant information from a single search page, what are the other search engines doing to at least remain in the running?
It's been mentioned recently that Google consider Bing to be their main competitor online when it comes to search, and it now seems obvious on why.
On the 13th October 2010, Facebook and Bing teamed up with "social search" and it looks to be an impressive solution for finding what you're looking for online and getting recommendations at the same time.
If you search for movies and restaurants, some of the results represent what your friends have selected. If you search for people, those with more connections to you pop up first.
Your friends have liked many things all over the internet, and now, instead of stumbling across a new movie or having to look at a friend's profile to see which restaurant they like, Facebook and Bing are bringing everything thing together in one place.
If you type in what you're looking for like "Italian restaurant in London" and the results would include a segment saying "Liked by your Facebook friends." This doesn't just go for movies, bars and dining. If you're searching for some new story, or blog, you'll see the ones your friends have publicly "liked"
How To Get Started
If you are logged into Facebook and visit Bing.com with the same browser, a pop-up will appear asking you if you want to participate. If you say "no thanks," the search results will display the original results. But if you accept the pop-up, you'll see the new, social-ized results. (this feature is currently being rolled out, so you may not see the feature yet)
This is part of Facebook's long term strategy for "instant personalization" initiative that has already been implemented on various websites to include, Pandora, Yelp, Scribd.
It's obvious that Facebook would prefer Bing over Google, which is potentially more of a social media competitor, but will Facebook ever outgrow Bing's usefulness and maybe launch its own proprietary search engine?
Are you ready for what the future of search has to offer, and is your company implementing a strategy to include what is currently being rolled out across the internet, or are you still focusing on just natural search and/or PPC? Maybe it's time to contact a social media consultant to help devise a search and social media strategy that will take you into next year "on-top of the game."
