A book marketer spotted someone relatively new on Twitter who gave his location as zipcode 90212 and stated he was in the film business. The book marketer instantly tweeted him and told him her business was in the same zip code.

Yes, she got a quick reply tweet back from him. And the beginning of a business relationship may have been started in the few seconds it took for the two of them to exchange tweets.

Unfortunately, many people erroneously believe that Twitter is about what someone had for dinner. The truth is that those people who are always tweeting about their food habits - unless they happen to be chefs or aspiring chefs - are missing the boat.

Twitter's format - a limit of 140 characters, which basically equals a two sentence IM - allows people to skim tweets quickly and spot what is of interest to them. Plus Twitter is so useful that there are tons and tons of third-party applications that make things even easier.

The same book marketer co-hosted a tweetchat about writing book proposals. She wrote an announcement at twitwall.com on how to join the tweetchat. This application reduced the announcement to a few words and then added a link to the longer announcement.

After the tweetchat was over, she slightly edited the transcript and put it on her blog at a new book-related site of hers. Then she created a budurl.com for the blog post's permalink and tweeted that the transcript was available. Within a few days 158 people had clicked through the budurl.com from Twitter to look at the edited tweetchat transcript.

Twitter is about sharing information and learning from shared information. So, for example, the book marketer read an article in The Wall Street Journal by novelist Alexander McCall Smith on how book fans often act as if fictional characters are real people. The book marketer created a budurl.com for the long Journal article link, then shared that budurl.com on Twitter. Book people following the book marketer appreciated reading the article about how real are fictional characters.

At the same time the book marketer found a link on Twitter to an article that grouped many of the third-party Twitter applications into categories. This was a very useful grouping for newbies on Twitter as well as seasoned Twitter users. So the book marketer was pleased that someone had thought to share this link on Twitter.

This reciprocal sharing of information is a huge part of the benefits of effectively using Twitter. Next time someone tells you that Twitter is only about what someone had for dinner, you'll be able to reply that this is not true. You can explain that Twitter is for people who want to learn more about the world around them - at 140 characters a tweet.
