TO FACEBOOKERS CONCERNING THE SECURITY THREATS AND WILL GUIDE YOU HOW TO USE IT

*NOTE: THIS ARTICLE IS NOT AGAINST FACEBOOK, BUT WILL ACT AS AWARENESS TO FACEBOOKERS CONCERNING THE SECURITY THREATS AND WILL GUIDE YOU HOW TO USE IT WELL!

Facebook is one among the most visited social networking website in the world; it is based in California and was founded by Mark Zukerberg, with his classmates in Harvard. Facebook was first created in 2004, and it has grown considerably today with more than 100 millions registered users, and is making total revenue of about $300,000,000 (2008).

This website has grown so much that security holes have not been covered yet! With the persistent rise in virus, spywares, malwares and other forms of attack, users are at risk and what is disturbing into this, users do not care about these evils which can ruin your system or steal your information! Below, I will mention the advantages of this website:

Facebook is a social networking platform, so it is splendid as you have the ability to know other persons throughout the world.

-Facebook can make you to trace your old friends in schools or whatever; you have lost several years ago.

-Facebook can make you search for a person, if you want to know his/her identity.

-Facebook has several services such as games where you can kill time.

-Facebook enables you to create Pages or Groups to promote something or someone for instance.

-Facebook enable you customize your profile if you want to attract people by uploading photos and so on.

-Facebook can advertize your product.

-Facebook is free but paid to do marketing. So, it seems Facebook is good, but is there any disadvantage? The answer is ‘NO'! YES, THERE IS NO RELATED DISADVANTAGE; IT IS JUST HOW YOU USE IT, THAT'S ALL! Due to its sky high increase in registered users, many hackers and bad guys are using it to steal information, identity and putting infected applications, videos and others to infect you as well! Now, you will ask, ‘Hey Angel Ali, these are disadvantages, right?' Again here, I will reply you ‘NO', like I told you, it is just a question how you use it! If someone is addicted to Facebook, pass his/her times mostly on Facebook for hours, in this sense I can say sleep on Facebook, where is Facebook fault? Of course, it's not Facebook fault, but it's you! Did Facebook ever tell you, ‘Hey sleep with me for hours?' No, right? It is crystal clear it is you, who have to change your habit!

Thus, concerning these security threats: viruses, malwares and so on, personally I think we must not blame Facebook totally as at such a high increase in users, it is no doubt to say that these system administrators who work there, will find it so damn difficult to control all the contents which are transacting on their website! Hence, if you have been infected, then it may because you lack some knowledge on security to protect yourself! Here are the security measures that you must aware to protect you from being attacked:

-First of all, use a long password, minimum 10 characters which will be difficult to know, by adding symbols, lower-uppercase characters, and numbers. For example, thEskYI5Bl8£ (the sky is blue), well don't use this now as password, LOL! It is just an example! Never use your pet name, parents or relative names, car numbers, animal names, stars name, and also never use the word ‘password', as many persons do this for password! Moreover, never write your password on desk or on your computer itself to remember, just try to remember your password like you remember you are a male or female (LOL).

-Go to your account setting and you will see below, it has been written ‘Account Security'. Click ‘Change' and a message will be displayed ‘To keep your Facebook account as safe as possible, we can notify you when your account is accessed from a computer or mobile device that you haven't used before.' Click ‘Yes'! This is a new feature of Facebook, many people still not aware of it. This will prompt you a message each time you log in and you will have to insert a ‘computer name'.

-Never accept people who you don't know, or do not have a good profile picture as it's a question of trust! -Never click on links which you don't know, even your friends give you as these links can be dangerous. -Never play videos, launch applications which are suspected.

-Never write sensitive information on your profile.

-Never send credit card numbers, passwords or any vulnerable data by message.

-Never accept Groups or Pages which say, ‘Know who visited your profile', ‘Know who has blocked you on Facebook', ‘Change the colors of your profile' or any related Groups or Pages like these. These Groups or Pages are fake! -Never enter a group or pages which are suspected.

-On your email, don't click on links related to Facebook. This method is called is called Phishing, bad guys send it and when you click, your security goes to hell as the link will direct you to another infected website. If you receive this kind of email, just simply, copy and paste the link on your browser above to test it! Beware, hackers can send these emails by using Facebook's own domainname, for example, ‘noreply@facebook.com' and others. Mind it, always take your precautions!

-Never accept applications which are suspected as these applications can be infect spywares or keyloggers included to steal your information!

-Never select on ‘Remember me' when logging to your account if you are on a public computer.

-Always scan your computers with your antivirus regularly! I hope these security measures will help you, mind it always take your precautions and be responsible for your act!
