Seven Killer Strategies to Reaching Critical Mass on Twitter

1. Look for people you already know.

Important: Make sure your Twitter profile is COMPLETELY set up! Then hit the "Find People" link at the top of the Twitter page, enter your email address and password, and let Twitter do the searching. The site will them return all the people in your list who are on twitter. Follow them, reply to some of their tweets or send them a personal message to make sure that they know you're following them, and there's good chance they'll follow you back.

How many followers can you get with this method? This really depends on your contact list and the chances that a large part of it will be on the site. 

2. Tweet your blog

A most common goal of a good Twitter presence will often be to direct followers to your website. They can then click on your ads and read your posts, which are longer than just 140 characters. They can also purchase your products and services. But another aim is to build a closer connection with the users you have, so they become regular visitors and potentially customers. You can easily let them know of new posts to your blog by tweeting them on Twitter. This also increases your followers!

3. Pay your followers!

This may not sound like the smartest or cheapest, but it's a way to bring in large numbers of followers.

For example: Giving away freebies in the marketing standard. You create goodwill, let potential customers try your products before they buy, and build a list of clients that you can draw on in the future.

IMPORTANT: However, make sure to follow the simple rule of what you give ALWAYS should cost you little BUT have high value to the recipient, you should find that offering freebies can have a fantastic effect on your revenues.

GREAT TIP: Lastly, give away a freebie to every new follower to your twitter page and once you receive their email address to send their freebie by email, you will be building an email list of people interested in what you have to offer.

4. Respond to requests.

In Joel Comm's book he repeats this throughout: "...successful Twitters use Twitter to do more than make announcements.

They use it to spark conversations. And they use it to JOIN conversations. Conversations are open and public, which makes them more valuable because if someone is following a conversation and is impressed with someone, they can follow the link back to that person's profile and follow them.

Remember, quality comments are best. According to Joel, saying, "Yeah, I'm having trouble with that too..." or quoting from Wikipedia is not going to do you any good. People follow your tweets if they feel they are any good or worth them reading. That's why it's a good idea to answer questions about your subject rather than any question you happen to see.

5. Mobilize your social network.

Connect your Tweets to other social sites such as Facebook or MySpace. You are able to let people see even more about you.

Joel notes that he has 5,000 friends on Facebook--the maximum the site allows. By placing his tweets on Facebook too, he's able to show all of those 5,000 people his Twitter content and give them a reason to follow him there as well.

6. Put your Twitter name in your signatures.

Joel says, "Such an easy thing to do, such an old idea...and so often forgotten.

It's a great way to alert all your people in your forums, email lists, and chat locations, that you are on Twitter. Get more followers too!

7. Run a contest.

Joel says, "Another way is to include discount codes in the tweets to keep people reading.

Joel explains how Jason Cormier on Twitter, who runs a search marketing and social media agency, takes a very different approach for his clients. He helps them to organize contests on Twitter.
