Would it be appropriate to add someone to your LinkedIn network that you don’t know well?

I've found a few people on LinkedIn that I know from a place where I've just started volunteering. Would it be appropriate to add them to my network now, or wait a couple months?

Also, I need suggestions for other professional networking sites like LinkedIn. Thanks.
