Does going through the military change someones personality dramatically?

Question From User - Answers in Comments.

A few days ago I saw comments in a social bookmarking site about soldiers and the wikileaks collateral murder thing. Quite a few people agreed that the people they knew who went through bootcamp were "changed" people, as in, brainwashed to be cold blooded killers, but I can't take that source reliably as it's a mainly liberal media site full of military bashers.

And as of recently a friend has told me that after he served he completely forgot all his civilian skills (creating art) prior to joining the military, with no idea why or how.

I'm in DEP atm, and wondering exactly how much of this is true, or is it just a load of b.s? I'm scared hearing stuff like this naturally. I'm a fairly obedient and submissive person by nature so I can't see how going through basic training will cause me to lose any intellectual skills as long as I keep following orders, and my MOS will be non-combat so I can't see myself becoming a cold blooded killer either.
