Wherever you go, you here the buzz surrounding Twitter. Nobody can stop talking about it! So, what is Twitter? Keep reading, and you will find out. The best answer I can give you is that Twitter is a social network and a micro-blog combined into one site. Just like so many others, you are probably so busy that you have difficulty finding the time sit down and check your emails or even instant message. This is why more and more people flock to Twitter everyday.
Twitter calls the messages people send “tweets.” Tweets on Twitter are not allowed to be more than 140 characters. When you tweet, it is posted on your Twitter home page, and then it is sent to all of your followers. What is a follower? A follower is someone who subscribes to a Twitter user. Some people like to call Twitter the online SMS. No matter what it is, breaking news, messages, or updates from another user or friend, any information is available when you use Twitter.
And, there are tons of options when it comes to sending and receiving tweets. Of course, you can directly send tweets through your Twitter site, or you can send via SMS on a mobile phone. There is also the option of using a third-party add-on: Twitterfox by Firefox, Twirl, or Snitter.
Twitter is the hottest, newest social networking website out there. Created by a private business in 2006, Twitter still continues to increase in popularity in the social networking and blogging world. The most fascinating aspect of Twitter is that it was not even created to be a social network, but, as you can see, it is number 3 among the top social sites, such as Facebook and MySpace, on the internet today.
Now that you have some background information on Twitter, we need to go over some of the downsides. Because it has only been online for only a little while, Twitter has had its share of glitches and bugs. One of the biggest issues Twitter has faced is account handling. In the beginning, Twitter was just not prepared for the large number of new users flooding in to register. And, there was several times Twitter had major security issues, causing many new members to leave the website within a month. These are the top reasons that Twitter got a bad rap in the press when they first started out. It increased in popularity from day one, but for negative reasons. Twitter has certainly come a long way in the past several years.
And, you will not believe some of the famous people who use Twitter. In 2007, the Los Angeles Fire Department made use of Twitter to update the public about the devastating California wildfires. Sometimes, NASA even uses Twitter to update about certain projects. Then, there is the United States President, Barack Obama. Everyone is familiar about his election campaign tweeting. Lastly, the Israel government used Twitter to hold press conferences and participate in the question and answer time regarding the ongoing fight against Hamas, Gaza.
