There are now dozens of applications for Twitter, with more coming down the pike every day. From simple posting applications to automatic content generators, the scope is enormous, so how do you choose the ones that can help you to be most effective?

Well we have done it for you!  After reviewing over 50 applications, and using most of them in our own "Twittering", we have come up with our top 6 recommendations.  These are:

MyTweetSpace

This application allows you to specify a new background for your Twitter page.  It is simple - a few points and clicks and you can automatically upload to your home page.  It's a great way to customize your page and to generate more interest than the vanilla versions offered by Twitter.  Getting your profile and home page right are two of the most important factors in getting more followers in Twitter.

TweetLater

Once you have your page ready, you want to set up this site to automate the following of people who follow you, and send direct messages to your new followers.  The message can be as simple as a welcome greeting, or may include a link to a webpage.  This might be your website, or could be for an affiliate program to earn you money.  Try not to be too pushy about this, and don't just send the same site as hundreds of other people - be original and you'll get more response.

Twollo

The nest step is to find a supply of people with like interests, so that you can follow them and, in turn, hope that they follow you.  Of course, to get followers, you could just go to someone's list and click on their followers, but you will be more successful if you have a more targeted approach.  Just getting followers for the sake of getting a large number might massage your ego, but it won't produce results.  And it's results that we want, whether that's driving people to our website for an online or bricks and mortar business, or sending people to a sales page to earn a commission.  Using Twollo will help you to find people in the niche you are promoting and therefore improve the click through rate when you send them links in your updates and direct messages.

Twitter Karma

If you are aggressive in building your list, you are likely to find that your list of people whom you are following will outstrip the number of people following you.  As you approach the 2,000 mark, this becomes very important.  Twitter won't let you get past 2,000 followers unless you are within 10% or so of the number you are following.  So if you want to get 2,000 people on your list, you should have no more than about 2,200 people you are following.  The easiest way to keep the ratio in order, is to use Twitter Karma.  This allows you to see who you are following that hasn't reciprocated and then 'bulk delete' them.  We recommend running this every week and dropping off people who are not following you.
