On facebook do you have to upload a picture to show the picture?

I mean like you know on facebook and myspace. You can add pics of yourself but you dont have to upload on myspace. On my computer i am unable to upload. But i really wanna add a lot of pics. Is there another way? If there is plz go step by step.
