Twitter is the latest and greatest form of online social networking, and twitter marketing has therefore been swooped upon by thousands of online marketers wanting to leverage the site's massive traffic to help them gain visitors. But just because something's popular doesn't necessarily mean it's a wise move to use it for marketing. This article will explore just how useful twitter marketing actually is, and discuss how to use it properly if you decide it's something for you.

Twitter marketing is essentially the practice of using a twitter account to market to people on the web, promoting a webpage that may offer a product or a service. Many massive companies are doing this already, some with real success. Dell for example have setup their own team of twitter marketers, people on their payroll who receive a full-time salary to sit all day on twitter and try and sell their products. The basic makeup of twitter is that people can choose to 'follow' you, that is they have opted to receive updates about your posts. But whether they choose to actually 'read' your posts is a different matter, and this is where twitter marketing becomes more of a cloudy area.

People assume, often wrongly, that the more followers you are able to get, the more marketing you will be able to do, and therefore the more money you will be able to make. The truth is, it doesn't quite work like this. As with everything in life, there's a bit more to it, and it's this point that can be the difference between you twitter marketing successfully, or failing miserably.

Having lots of followers is great, but in order to market to those followers, you need them to actually read your posts. People in general will make their twitter account, then follow as many people as they can in their chosen niche, in the hopes that they will follow them back. What you often find is that your list of followers is nothing more than people just like you, trying desperately to market to the twitter crowd, reading nothing at all.

The key, much like forum posting is participation. Participate, and you will succeed. Find or create useful quality information, charge nothing for it and provide it to your followers. Send a few tweets actively encouraging them to read your blog posts, or a link where they can download really quality information for free. Give as much as you can. Also, don't just wait for people to speak to you, be pro-active and talk to them. Don't spam people, this is the quickest way to destroy your twitter marketing endeavour, but spark up conversation with people and get involved.
