Entrepreneur, college student, business owner or house wife; Facebook has become a global phenomenon and its time YOU were on it! Setting up a Facebook profile is simple. Here we will show you the most effective, yet simple steps to setting up a professional Facebook profile.
1. visit Facebook.com and you'll see the signup box - complete all the requested details 2. if you are asked to enter funny looking letters in a box - do it. This is known as a captcha and is used to try and stop automatic internet spam
This is the core of your Facebook setup, however there are a number of optional steps along the way.
1. You can connect to other people on Facebook using your email address book - very easy; just enter your email and password to find your friends 2. You can enter your education and work details (this will help you find friends later) 3. You can add a photo via upload or take one with your webcam
One of the most important aspects of your Facebook profile is your avatar or Facebook icon (the photo you uploaded above). Facebook users will use your photo to identify you when you post content. Pick a good head shot for best results.
Be sure to complete your profile with as much information as possible; your workplace, business and interests will all help people connect with you and make your profile trustworthy and authentic.
Privacy settings are important! On the top right of the page click on "Privacy Settings" (found in the "Account" drop-down menu). In privacy settings you can setup how "public" your Facebook presence is. Here you will see a list of options - the most important are "Profile Information" and "Contact Information". If you are keeping Facebook strictly for personal friends and family then you can set email & phone to be viewable by friends, however if you intend on networking on Facebook with people you do not know in the real world it is strongly recommend to hide email and phone from everyone. If you want to stay out of the search engines then click on "search" and disallow "Public Search Results".
Another personal "must" for me is to go to Account (top right) & account settings - then click on the "Notifications" tab. Personally I don't want to receive email notifications for every little thing on my Facebook profile so I turn most of these off.
Now you start finding friends (don't worry - if you entered your education details they'll soon start finding you!). Type the name of a friend in the search bar at the top, a drop-down menu of "suggestions" will appear (I find this annoying!) - go to the bottom of the dropdown and click on the "see more results". If you find someone you know click on "add as friend". Simple!
