Twitter can be confusing at first, and some have found it to be daunting even after becoming convinced that it's a great tool to use for building your business, your reputation, and your visibility online.

1. Tweet some good content 3-5 times per day - No one can know everything, but you can learn how to quickly ascertain what's going on in your market and your field, and become a filter and a conduit for some really interesting information. It's not hard to find some great content out there - subscribe to blogs of experts, bookmark some great sites and even read offline print publications of interest. It's a great way to pass some time at your favorite bookstore/coffee shop. Take your notebook along and jot down some interesting things, and even some links to check out when you get home. Or, just take your laptop with you if Wi-Fi is offered. Let's face it - we're all on information overload, including your prospects, your clients, and your Twitter followers. If you become a trusted source of valuable information, your followers will begin to look forward to your tweets.
2. Engage in conversations - Make sure you really have something of interest to say, and then just respond or reply to join the conversations going on. Answer questions, make suggestions, ask your own questions and look for the comments others will make. You never know who's going to see your conversational threads on Twitter. Use 3rd party Twitter apps to keep a close eye on threads of interest. I like Hoot Suite for this. TweetDeck is another favorite.
3. ReTweet other people's tweets - This is just taking what you see on another person's status update and clicking on the "ReTweet" button. It will then become available to all your followers. It will lend credibility to you, but give full credit to the original tweeter (also called a tweep). The abbreviation for this is RT. Remember, you are doing your followers a favor to offer up interesting and informative content, plus the fact you are giving positive strokes to the one you are retweeting. Most folks pay attention to people who RT their content, and you can rest assured, it will come back to you in a good way. Be careful, however, to not overdo it and use it as an excuse for not having anything of value to say for yourself.
4. Make it easy for others to ReTweet and follow you - Even though you have room to use 140 characters, it's best if you only plan to use no more than 120. That leaves room for others who want to RT your tweet to have room to add in a comment of their own, usually done in square brackets. Also, on your website and your blog, make sure you have a clickable Twitter icon that says, "Follow Me." Also, on your blog, use the TweetMeme plugin. (This is a WordPress plugin. If you use another blogging platform, find out what's available.)This allows people to read your blog, and simply press "Retweet" and they've ReTweeted a shortened URL link to your blog post in about 5 seconds.
