Complete video at: fora.tv Protesters in Iran have been leveraging social media to broadcast their plight since sharp dissent erupted back in June 2009 after the disputed re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. In this clip, Al Jazeera's Riyaad Minty attempts to add context to the deluge of tweets streaming out of Iran. ----- In another popular session from the 2009 Media 140 conference about the impact of social media sites on journalism, panelists considered an event that highlighted the growing power of social media to shape the news: the pro-democracy uprising in Iran. - Australian Broadcasting Corporation Riyaad Minty grew up in Johannesburg, South Africa. At the age of 19, he when he founded his first mobile technology company. During its first year, the company brokered deals with various blue chip companies from every continent. In 2006 Minty joined the Al Jazeera Network, where he currently works as part of the New Media team, specialising in mobile and social media. He values a strong sense of community and is regularly asked to present workshops in his home country, South Africa.
