A social media promoter wants to talk to me about my songs; I don’t really know what to do?

Question From User - Answers in Comments.

I’ve written a couple of songs, a social media promoter had listened to a few of them and contacted me saying that she wants to help me out, I don’t know if I should, I don’t even know what she will exactly do? Is this a good idea or a sham? A friend of mine had previously worked with her and tells me she is really nice and is ‘the real deal’ but I don’t want my songs to get stolen or anything, but I do want to go forward from where I am. How can i check her out to know if she is for real or not?

Advice?

P.s. sorry if this is in the wrong category, i wasn't really sure where to put this one :/
Sean: I’ve done a ‘poor mans copyright’ (though I doubt that this is very helpful)
Also to copyright my songs can I go to a lawyer and have something done instead?
I don’t know of any agencies I can go to where I live (I’m living in a pretty small town in Canada, I’m assuming I’d probably have to go into a big city to find an agency?)
