First, you have to navigate your browser to the Twitter sign up page, either by searching for "Twitter Sign Up" on your favourite search engine or simply by typing or copying and pasting the following URL into your browser bar: twitter.com/signup.
Once you're on the actual Twitter sign up page, you'll need to enter the following basic information:
The most important part of the Twitter sign up process for anyone who's hoping to use it for marketing purposes is the selection of a username. There are a few of schools of thought on this subject with opposing opinions. Some say that you should choose a keyword-rich username name, while others argue that, since it is a social microblogging platform - the operative word being social - you should use your real name.
You should think this through carefully by thinking about who your target audience is and how you can best position yourself with them: as a real person or as a keyword.
Either way, you should "look forward" to running through multiple versions of your desired username before finding one that hasn't already been taken, especially since Twitter caps username lengths at 15 characters. If you get stuck, try introducing a few numbers into your name (symbols aren't accepted).
Note: if you've been "tweeting" on your mobile phone up to this point, you can bypass the regular Twitter sign up page by clicking on the link at the top of top and you'll be taken to a page where you can start the sign up process by entering your mobile phone number.
By default, the "let others find me by my email address" option is checked. You may or may not want to allow this (you are given the option to find people by their email addresses without actually displaying their email addresses). If you don't want, obviously you will need to uncheck the box.
Next, you'll have to agree to the Terms of Service. It's pretty standard stuff, but it's always in your best interest to read something before "signing" it. The Twitter sign up page also gives you the option to review their Privacy Policy, which, in light of the recent concerns over the privacy policy of social media giant Facebook, is obviously in your best interest to take a look at.
You'll also notice that at the bottom of the Twitter sign up page, just below the "submit" button, you're presented with an option to receive email updates from Twitter. It's checked by default.
Since the email update volume is pretty light - and sometimes the updates are useful - you may want to consider leaving this option checked.
After you've completed all of the foregoing steps, you're finally ready to click on the submit button, after which you'll be taken to your unverified profile page.
At the top of this page you'll see a notice that advises you to visit your email inbox so you can verify your account.
All you need to do is visit your email inbox, open up the email generated in response to your completion of the Twitter sign up page, and click on the link in that email.
Once you've verified you're account, you will have completed the Twitter sign up process and you'll finally be ready to join - and enjoy - the "conversation."
